Suriname Kicks off Tourism Month with a Series of Exciting Events Leading to World Tourism Day

Suriname is celebrating Tourism Month with a series of vibrant events aimed at promoting the country’s rich tourism potential. The month-long festivities will culminate on World Tourism Day (September 27th), a global event dedicated to highlighting the significance of tourism worldwide.

The Tourism Month officially began last Friday with a dynamic kick-off event hosted by the Tourism Directorate of the Ministry of Transport, Communication, and Tourism, at the iconic Lalla Rookh building. The launch ceremony was graced by prominent figures, including Minister Albert Jubithana, Tourism Director Rabin Boeddha, and District Commissioner of Commewijne Mohamedsafiek Radjab.

Panel Discussion and Industry Insights

The event featured an insightful panel discussion, designed to inform and engage the public about Suriname’s diverse offerings in the tourism sector. The discussion focused on the potential of tourism and the exciting opportunities available in this thriving industry. Participants also debated the 2023 theme, “Tourism & Green Investment”, exploring the role of sustainable tourism and the environment in shaping the future of the sector.

Panelists included industry leaders such as Dinesh Ramlal, Board Member of the Suriname Tourism Foundation, Sirano Zaalman, CEO of Access Suriname Travel, and renowned fashion designer Zoë Heyns. The panel emphasized the importance of cooperation within the tourism sector to enhance Suriname’s global standing as a must-visit destination.

Uniting the Tourism Sector for Greater Impact

“This initiative marks an important step in bringing together all stakeholders within the tourism sector,” said Ruben Forster, Tourism Coordinator for Nickerie. “We are now working together to improve Suriname’s tourism offerings, boost economic growth, and build strong partnerships. Additionally, we are striving to raise awareness about the vast range of attractions Suriname has to offer, especially in districts like Nickerie and Saramacca.”

Forster further noted that the Tourism Directorate has started a new initiative to showcase the activities taking place in various districts. The events and experiences are now listed on the official tourism website, where visitors can explore activities by region.

Highlighting Suriname’s Rich Cultural Diversity

As part of the celebrations, Jo-ann Misiekaba, Deputy Director of the Tourism Directorate, announced an exciting Surinamese Festival. This major cultural event will feature contributions from a variety of districts, cultures, and the local business community. A key highlight will be the creation of a Kids Area, where children can learn about tourism in an engaging and creative manner.

With a focus on sustainability, community involvement, and cultural exchange, Suriname is ready to offer a wide range of experiences for locals and tourists alike.
