WANICA

If you’ve entered Suriname via Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (Zanderij), you’ve likely driven through Wanica on your way to Paramaribo. Located southwest of the capital, Wanica is a district steeped in history, culture, and local flavor.

Once called the “District of Suriname,” it was renamed Wanica after the 1983 district reorganization. The name comes from several local landmarks: the Path of Wanica, the Wanica polder, and the Wanica Creek flowing through the northwestern area.

Lelydorp – The Heart of Wanica

The main town of Wanica is Lelydorp, affectionately known by locals as simply “Dorp” (village). Despite its small nickname, Lelydorp has grown into a commercial hub, home to banks, eateries, restaurants, and other businesses serving travelers and locals alike.

Lelydorp is also known for its traditional Javanese Warungs along the main road — perfect pit stops to enjoy dishes like noodles, fried rice, satay, or saoto soup.

Fun fact: The original name of Lelydorp was Kofidjompo, which means “Kofi jumped.” Legend has it that Kofi, a runaway slave, jumped across a wide creek here in an almost acrobatic escape to freedom.

For those passing through on the way to Para District resorts, a stopover in Lelydorp is highly recommended.

Domburg – Riverside Charm

Another gem in Wanica is Domburg, a charming town along the Suriname River.

Along the riverside pier in Domburg, you’ll find Javanese Warungs where locals and visitors gather, especially on Sundays. One of the most requested dishes is Berkat — a delightful mix of:

  • White rice and yellow rice
  • Noodles and yellow coconut chicken wrapped in banana leaf
  • Potato sambal, satay, and other small Javanese delicacies

It’s a true taste of authentic Surinamese-Javanese cuisine.

Nature & Attractions

A special highlight of Wanica is the Neotropical Butterfly Park, the first butterfly garden in Suriname. Here, colorful tropical butterflies mingle freely among visitors, creating a magical, immersive experience.

The park also features an insect museum, showcasing tropical beetles, grasshoppers, and other fascinating species.

Tip: Visits require an appointment and availability may vary, so make sure to plan ahead.

Wanica is easily explored by car or bike, making it an ideal stop for travelers heading to nearby resorts or enjoying a cultural and culinary day trip.
